Staying Cool with Braces-Friendly Treats

Summer is finally here, and so are tasty treats! We know summertime is all about vacationing, swimming, barbecues, and getting together with friends and family. And with the hot summer sun, everyone grabs a cool treat to cool off. However, most treats are unhealthy, and not friendly to braces. That’s why at Huls Orthodontics, we have come up with a list of what treats you can enjoy while wearing braces this summer.

Tasty Treats for the Summer!

We know everyone loves to grab sweet treats when under the hot sun. This includes ice cream, snow cones, soda, smoothies, and everything in between. Of course, these all are filled with sugar and artificial sweeteners. And as anyone knows, sugar can lead to cavities. And chewing on hard foods can lead to wear and tear on your braces. If you are looking for healthier alternatives, here’s what to eat to curb your sugar cravings.
  • Yogurt- Yogurt is a healthy alternative to creamy ice cream we all know and love. It’s loaded with calcium, probiotics, and vitamins & minerals that will help keep your teeth strong and healthy. However, some flavored yogurts contain a high sugar content, so try to choose one’s that are low in sugar, and then add in your favorite mix-ins like nuts, berries, and granola.
  • Fruit- Instead of munching on a hard, sugar-filled candy bar, try snacking on frozen fruit like berries or bananas. Fruits that are in season during the summer include berries, cherries, mangoes, and watermelon. These all include healthful antioxidants, and loads of vitamins, and can help you stay hydrated. You can even dip your fruit in melted dark chocolate before freezing for a decadent dessert.
  • DIY Smoothies- Most pre-made or in-restaurant smoothies are filled with added sugars. To make a healthier (and cost-effective) option, make them at home! By making them at home, you can control what exactly you put in your smoothies. Put in leafy greens to get your daily take of vegetables. Or add in nut butter or protein powder to get more protein. You can easily find healthy smoothie recipes online.
  • DIY Fruit Pops- Popsicles can be a delicious way to cool down, but are full of syrup and sugar that can be harmful to your teeth. For a healthier alternative, make fruit pops at home that don’t contain any added sugars or colors found in store-bought popsicles. Simply choose your fruits, puree, and pour into ice-pop molds, then pop in the freezer. You can also customize them to create your favorite flavor.
  • Sparkling Water- Sparkling water is a great option because, while they’re carbonated like soda, they don’t contain as much or any sugar. Plus, it’s easy to find them at your local grocery store. You can find flavored ones that will make them just as tasty as drinking soda.

Just make sure to check the back of the label to confirm that there aren’t any added sugars listed. Also, to protect the enamel of your teeth, drink through a straw.
