We're proud to offer a variety of treatment options ranging from metal braces to Invisalign clear aligners, and we personalize each patient's treatment plan to fit even the busiest of lifestyles. But no matter which orthodontic treatment you and our expert orthodontist choose, you'll end on one final phase of treatment: retention.

Why You Need a Retainer

Whether you're having your braces taken off or finishing your last pair of Invisalign aligners, once you finish your orthodontic treatment, we know you'll be excited. But before you get too excited, remember that you're not quite out of the woods yet. While your teeth will be in new positions at the end of your treatment, the ligaments and tissues that support them will have yet to adapt to these new positions. This means that left to their own devices, your teeth will simply drift back to their old positions and erase your hard work! A retainer helps to keep your teeth in their new alignment until the rest of the mouth has time to adapt, protecting your smile for the long term. Retainers are a mandatory part of any orthodontic treatment, and our Monticello orthodontist will help you choose the type of retainer that's best for your unique situation.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley_retainerHawley retainers are the most common type of retainer and work well for the majority of patients. Hawley retainers are made from a molded piece of acrylic and a series of wires protruding from the acrylic that keep your teeth in place. Hawleys offer a great option for most patients, and we can even customize the acrylic with any colors or patterns you prefer.

Essix Retainer

essixThe Essix retainer is another type of removable retainer, but instead of using acrylic and metal, Essix retainers are made from molded plastic that fits directly over the teeth. Essix retainers are very similar to Invisalign aligners, and they offer a convenient, durable, and cost-effective option for many patients.

Fixed Retainers

lingualbondedretainerThe fixed retainer, also called a bonded lingual retainer, is different from the other two in that it's fixed in the mouth with dental cement and can't be removed. That said, fixed retainers are smaller and lower profile than other retainers, as they're made from only a metal wire cemented to the back of the bottom front teeth. Fixed retainers are a great option for patients with a high risk of tooth regression, as they can't be removed and act as a permanent guard from shifting. As with removable retainers, it is important to keep them clean. When brushing, carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth as well as the wire. If your retainer breaks at any time during the retention phase, please do not adjust it yourself. Instead, call us immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.
